A Message from Our Director

​As I reflect on this past year, I am reminded of the power of safe housing—and our incredible community that makes our mission possible: To provide urgent home repair to neighbors of the Swannanoa Valley who are financially unable to maintain their homes in a safe or livable condition. At Hammer & Heart, we believe that every person deserves a home that protects their health, preserves their dignity, and allows them to thrive. Thanks to your support, our mission becomes a reality for more of our neighbors every day.

This year, our volunteers, professional contractors, and staff completed 135 home repair projects in the Swannanoa Valley for neighbors with disabilities, and low-income in the Swannanoa Valley. A repaired roof meant a family could sleep through the night without worrying about leaks. A new ramp meant a wife could return home after her hospital stay.  A repaired heater meant a family no longer had to choose between staying warm and paying their bills.

These repairs may seem small on the surface, but to the people we serve, they are not only life-changing, but they enable them to stay in their homes. These repairs also remind our neighbors that this community sees them, values them.

 

None of this work would be possible without you—our volunteers, donors, partners, and collaborators. You give your time, resources, and skills. You show up again and again because you believe, as we do, that everyone deserves a safe place to call home.

 

As we look ahead and beyond Hurricane Helene storm recovery, the need continues to grow. Rising costs, deferred maintenance, and limited resources mean more of our neighbors are having to choose between safe living conditions and medication or food. But with your continued partnership, we can meet those needs—with compassion, top quality craftsmanship, and with unwavering dedication.
