THE NEED

Twelve years ago, Carl had a job installing drywall. Then came the shoulder injury that forced him into early retirement. His home, inherited from his father, had been built in the 1940s. It had wiring issues, roof leaks, and structural damage.

But these issues were minor compared to the struggle of winter nights. The house had no heat—and no insulation. To keep warm, Carl had to wear his warmest clothes and utilize several space heaters, setting alarms throughout the night so he could move the heaters to different outlets. Otherwise, his overheated extension cord would trip the breaker.
Outside, an old deck and ramp had rotted and collapsed. This had torn off part of the siding, which in turn had exposed the floor joists to the elements. Evidently, Carl's safety and well-being were at risk.
THE SOLUTION

Through local contractors and volunteer labor, Hammer & Heart was able to build an accessibility ramp, repair damaged siding, replace a damaged door, rebuild rotted floor joists and install new, safe wiring in his home.

Carl also has a plan in place to address other issues as they arise.

A note from Carl: "I want to thank Hammer & Heart from the bottom of my heart for the work that was done on my home. The [contractors] and volunteers came in and worked day after day to make some badly needed repairs. Everyone who came to my home was kind and caring. They all did great work and now my home is safe again. I could not be happier with the improvements... this was truly an answer to my prayers. I will forever be grateful for the work you did on my home."
