THE NEED

Sally Milton* loves the home she's lived in for over twenty-three years. It’s comfortable, familiar, and just what she needs.

Sally, a widow and retiree, has social security and state retirement checks that meet her immediate needs. Food, medical bills, mortgage payments, and utilities are provided for—but her home is not. The mobile home is aging and in need of attention.

Now seventy-two, Sally's mobility is reduced. Her knees have been a problem for years. Further complicating the issue, the once-manageable steps and landings on her double-wide home have become a dangerous challenge. Her three sets of stairs have never been replaced and are unstable with decay.

In addition, the combination of sunlight and shade over her home has created a perfect environment for mold, which has rotted her fascia boards and discolored her siding. Her heating system is antiquated and inefficient. As if all this isn't enough, her roof is more than twenty-five years old and is missing over sixty shingles.

These issues are expensive to fix, but even more expensive to ignore. Not only will they lead to irreparable property damage if left unaddressed, but they also pose great risk of harm to Sally herself.
THE SOLUTION

Through the generosity of donors and volunteers, Hammer & Heart has now replaced Sally's rotted porch, built her an accessibility ramp, repaired her roof's damaged fascia and cleaned her siding. Hammer & Heart volunteers will follow up in the spring to stain her ramp and back porch.

"Hammer and Heart has done a great job on my home and has the nicest volunteers who know what they are doing. Everyone was professional and kind. My favorite repair was the new landing and steps to the back yard. Before H&H replaced it, there was a gap of several inches between the door, and an old landing that was on its last legs and prefab stairs that were not the right height and had no railings. I was always worried me or my dog would be hurt. Now, my dog goes flying out his doggie door and down the stairs to explore his yard and greet visitors."

Your gifts made a life-changing difference for Sally (and her dog!) Thank you.
